Hertfordshire's landfill is being used up at a very fast pace - due to be exhausted in six years. If all the discarded plastic bags, coke cans and other litter was collected, it would probably be full by next week. The whole place is thoroughly dirty. Visit Hertfordshire's most remote woodland and you will undoubtedly find litter. Drive along any main road, and you will see plastic bags hanging from the trees.
It always startles me that the wildlife is capable of surviving in this kind of landscape. It shouldn't be surprising, as I've found in studying Chernobyl that a nuclear accident is less harmful to wildlife than the presence of man. (That's over a period of 20 years, mind you!)
In and around Watford, Grey Herons are thriving. It's a fairly watery place - three rivers - and they can be seen every day quite easily.
